Varosha

Varosha is found in northern Cyprus and has been a ghost town since 1974. In 1974 Turkish armed forces invaded Cyprus and managed to take control of the north of the island, including the tourist area of Varosha found in the city of Famagusta.

Prior to 1974 Varosha was a flourishing tourist town with many high rise hotels and apartment blocks catering to the thousands of tourists that flocked there in the summer months. After being taken over by the Turkish, the Turkish military fenced off the area and have not allowed anyone but the Turkish military and personnel of the UN into the former tourist hot spot.

As it has now been thirty five years the buildings have started to fall into disrepair because of natural weather occurrences and no one to look after them.

One good thing that has happened is that sea turtles have started to use the beaches of Varosha as nesting grounds providing them with a quiet area away from Human interruption.

  1. Are military and UN-people only still allowed in the city? Or can I go there if I want to?
