Prypiat

Prypiat was a vibrant city of the Ukraine not far from the capital of Kiev in the 1980's until a fateful event in 1986. In 1986 the well known Chernobyl disaster happened causing nuclear fallout to cover a large area, including Prypiat where all the Chernobyl nuclear power plant workers lived.

Prior to 1986 fifty thousand people lived in Prypiat but the Chernobyl disaster changed this as the whole city had to be abandoned because of the dangerous nuclear fallout. Everyone who lived in Prypiat was moved to a newly built city called Slavutych.

For many years after the disaster the city stayed as a museum to what had happened as everyone left in a hurry so the whole city was left with all belongings still in the positions of when people were asked to leave. Unfortunately sometime in the past decade people have heavily looted the city of its belongings causing the government to post police and military personnel to guard the empty city from people wishing to take anything left.

Although it is believed that within a few years it will be safe to return to the city of Prypiat it is believed that by this time it will still be unsafe as the buildings have fallen into disrepair. Most people have said they would not want to live in this area anyway.

This is a ghost town of large proportions and is likely to stay an eerie ghost town for many years, if not decades to come.
